Monitoring My GAME Plan
I spent the last couple of days getting the computer lab ready for students to create a podcast. I was hoping to start this week but had a few set backs-not related to getting things ready. I found a great tutorial that shows students how to use garage band to create their podcast. I had originally stated that I would try to learn a new tool a week. This will be possible to do through tutorials and help of others, but I don’t think applying them in the classroom that often will be feasible. But, I can expose students to the tools I learned by showing them examples of others work and tutorials on how to use the tool. As for now, I think I am making progress. Being our next assignment is to create a wiki, it will be my tool to investigate next. I participated in one in a previous class and it took me a whole week to figure out how to add to a chart some else created. But that’s how I learn best, by doing. It may take me awhile to figure it out, but I will eventually. If you are in my group for this activity, I apologize now, but I will figure things out and do my best.

Tutorials are a wonderful tool to not only help you understand new tools, but to help your students, also. As you mentioned, one of the best ways to learn something new is to just try it. You and your students can learn together by experiencing new tools. Students love to see that teachers are human and don't know everything! : ) Have you thought about asking your students to teach you and/or the class about a technology tool they're familiar with?

ReplyDeleteI wish I had a student available for assistance. This year is the first year in three years that half of my class has Internet access. These students haven't learned any tools other than looking at Youtube and playing games. It is sad but it's true that 90% of my class are on free and reduced lunch and get most of their clothes from family connections. They have very little background knowledge and most don't have gaming equipment that most kids have this day and time. But I must say, they love using technology in the classroom and I hope to teach them as much as I can-maybe they can pass it on to their next teacher-to their parents even.
It is always frustrating when things dont always go as planned. I am slowly, and I mean very slowly, learned to roll with the punches. It always seems to work out some way or another. I think your students are going to love doing podcasts. Technology no matter how simple or difficult is always fun for students. Also, don't feel bad about the wiki. I am in the same boat. It took me longer than i expected to figure that one out and i am still a little confused about them. Good luck with your GAME plan.
ReplyDeleteYou are right about that, the way to learn best is by doing in it, again and again. I personally consider my self a tech educated person, since technology was my previous line of work. But using technology in education is a different deal. I know how to use the resources, but through this Walden curses I am learning how to use it in my classroom, and how to make students embrace it too. Like you, I will keep learning and trying to apply that knowledge.
